Cost of Studying in Korea: Complete Breakdown

Understanding the financial requirements is crucial when planning to study in Korea. This article provides a comprehensive breakdown of all expenses including tuition fees ranging from $3,000-$15,000 annually, living costs in different cities, health insurance, and other essential expenses.

Tuition Fees

Tuition depends on the type of university and your field of study. As a broad guide:

  • National and public universities: roughly USD 3,000–5,000 per year for many programmes
  • Private universities: roughly USD 6,000–10,000 per year for humanities and business
  • Engineering, science, arts and medicine: generally higher, reaching USD 12,000–15,000 per year at some private institutions
  • Graduate programmes: often slightly higher per semester than undergraduate study

Most universities offer tuition reductions of 30–100% for international students with strong grades or TOPIK scores, and many continue these scholarships each semester based on GPA. A one-time admission fee is also charged in the first semester.

Living Costs by City

Living costs vary sharply between Seoul and other cities. Typical monthly budgets for a student:

  • Seoul: about KRW 1.0–1.5 million (USD 750–1,100) including rent
  • Busan, Daegu, Incheon: about KRW 800,000–1.2 million
  • Smaller cities and regional campuses: about KRW 650,000–1 million

Accommodation

University dormitories are the cheapest option, often KRW 250,000–500,000 per month with some meals available. A goshiwon (small private room) costs around KRW 300,000–550,000, while a one-room apartment usually needs a deposit of KRW 3–10 million plus monthly rent of KRW 400,000–700,000 in Seoul. See our accommodation guide for a full comparison.

Food, Transport and Phone

  • Food: KRW 300,000–500,000 per month — campus cafeterias offer meals for a few thousand won, and cooking at home saves more.
  • Transport: KRW 50,000–80,000 per month using the subway and buses with a T-money card.
  • Mobile phone: KRW 30,000–60,000 per month, with cheaper prepaid plans available.

Health Insurance and One-Time Costs

International students staying more than six months are enrolled in Korea's National Health Insurance, which costs roughly KRW 70,000–80,000 per month for students and covers a large share of medical expenses. Budget also for one-time costs: visa fees, document attestation, your flight, the Alien Registration Card fee, bedding and household basics, and possibly a housing deposit.

Part-Time Work

D-2 students can apply for permission to work part-time, generally up to around 20–25 hours per week during semesters depending on TOPIK level and academic standing, and more during vacations. With Korea's minimum wage around KRW 10,000 per hour, part-time work helps with daily expenses — but it should not be relied upon to pay tuition, and working without permission can cost you your visa.

Sample First-Year Budget

A student at a private university in Seoul with a 50% scholarship might plan roughly: tuition USD 4,000–5,000, living costs USD 9,000–12,000, insurance and one-time costs USD 1,500–2,000 — around USD 15,000–19,000 for the first year. Choosing a regional university and a dormitory can reduce this significantly.

Requirements, fees and amounts change from year to year and can differ between embassies and universities. Always confirm current figures with the Korean Embassy in Islamabad, the official Study in Korea portal or your university before you apply — or ask our advisors to check the latest requirements for your case.
