Mastering Korean is key to a successful study experience in Korea. This comprehensive list includes the best language schools across major cities, their program structures, costs, and admission requirements. Whether you're a beginner or advanced learner, find the perfect program for your needs.
Why Learn Korean Before (or During) Your Degree
Many Korean universities now offer English-taught degrees, but daily life — supermarkets, part-time jobs, hospital visits, making Korean friends — happens in Korean. Students who reach a working level of Korean adapt faster, find part-time work more easily and stand out to employers after graduation. For Korean-taught degrees, a TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) level 3 or 4 is often required for admission and level 4 or higher for graduation.
How University Language Institutes Work
Most international students learn through language institutes attached to universities, known as eohakdang. They follow a predictable structure:
- Four 10-week terms per year — spring, summer, fall and winter
- Around 20 hours of class per week, usually in the morning or afternoon
- Six levels, from absolute beginner to advanced, with placement tests on arrival
- Tuition typically in the range of KRW 1.5–1.9 million per term at well-known Seoul universities, with lower fees outside the capital
- Students hold a D-4 visa and can often move straight into the same university's degree programmes
Well-Known Language Programmes in Seoul
Yonsei University Korean Language Institute
The oldest university language institute in Korea, known for its rigorous, grammar-focused teaching and its own textbook series. Classes move quickly, which suits disciplined learners aiming for a high TOPIK score.
Seoul National University Language Education Institute
Strong academic reputation and a structured curriculum that emphasises reading and writing — useful for students heading into Korean-taught graduate programmes.
Korea University Korean Language Center
Popular for its balance of speaking practice and academic Korean, with an active campus life that helps students practise outside class.
Sogang University Korean Language Education Center
Famous for its communication-first method: students speak from the first day. Excellent for those who want conversational confidence quickly.
Ewha, Kyung Hee and Sungkyunkwan
Each runs respected programmes with slightly different strengths — cultural activities, smaller classes or lower costs — and is worth comparing on schedule and price.
Options Outside Seoul
Cities such as Busan, Daegu, Daejeon and Gwangju host strong language institutes at universities like Pusan National University, Kyungpook National University and Chonnam National University. Tuition and rent are noticeably lower, classes often have fewer students from your home country, and you are pushed to use Korean every day. For many Pakistani students on a budget, studying outside Seoul is the smarter choice.
Admission Requirements
- High school completion (Intermediate / A-levels or equivalent) with attested certificates
- A valid passport and completed application form
- Bank statement showing sufficient funds for tuition and living costs
- Application fee and first-term tuition payment
- Some institutes ask for a short study plan or interview
Applications usually close two to three months before each term begins, so plan at least four months ahead to leave time for the D-4 visa.
Choosing the Right Programme for You
- Goal: if you plan a Korean-taught degree, choose an institute linked to your target university.
- Learning style: grammar-heavy (Yonsei, SNU) versus speaking-first (Sogang).
- Budget: compare tuition plus rent; regional cities can save a large share of total costs.
- Class mix: institutes with a diverse student body push you to communicate in Korean.
Tips to Progress Faster
Learn Hangul before you arrive — it takes a week or two. Practise daily with a language-exchange partner, watch Korean content with Korean subtitles, and sit the TOPIK as soon as you reach each new level so you always have an official score to show universities and employers.
Requirements, fees and amounts change from year to year and can differ between embassies and universities. Always confirm current figures with the Korean Embassy in Islamabad, the official Study in Korea portal or your university before you apply — or ask our advisors to check the latest requirements for your case.
Our advisors help students compare institutes, apply for the right term and prepare D-4 visa documents. If your goal is a degree in Korea, we can also plan a pathway from language school straight into your chosen university.
